Cuba Segundo Milenio

En un país donde el gobierno totalitario del mismo había estructurado e impuesto el uso simultaneo de dos tipos de moneda, el CUC o Peso Convertible (en léxico de pueblo “chavito”) era el premio máximo, la papeleta que oficialmente sustituía al dólar -la codiciada moneda del enemigo- desvalorizando esta última en caprichosa represalia al efectuarse cualquier tipo de canje en CUCs. Era además la moneda que le permitía al ciudadano de a pie el acceso a los lugares de turistas y de consumo de ciertos artículos que hasta la aparición de capital foráneo por estas tierras habían estado vedados para la población. Existía además el “Peso Nacional” o CUP, la moneda del pueblo, con la que se le pagaba al obrero revolucionario un salario promedio que merodeaba los doscientos cincuenta pesos: mensuales. Cada CUC tenía un valor de conversión en CUPs, o “Pesos Nacionales”, de veinticinco por uno. De manera que cada beneficiario de los envíos del Reparador de Esperanzas al presente recibía el equivalente a quinientos pesos anualmente, o sea el salario aproximado de dos meses por año.

History has the fascinating peculiarity of repeating itself and there are not many cultures that effectively learn from past experiences. The Cuban community of the United States is no exception to this societal rule. In 2008 the majority of an enigmatically mixed Cuban American demography casted (again) a decision lured by demagoguery and in 2012 – remarkably- they repeated the offense, as old renegades from the historical Cuban exile revisited their old antics and along with newer generations of indulging “political hybrids” voted for a decisively leftist, anti-American President a half century after the homeland was handed to the ultimate master of deceit. It remains totally mystifying how Cubans would fall for the same political rhetoric, not just once more, but twice within a four year period in this information age.

Even more incomprehensible is the fact that the misled followers of such dooming doctrine range from the elitist, opulent groups within society to the underprivileged masses around the world. The claim for “social equality” and “fair distribution of wealth” has been found to be the historical mantra of the left, uniting the dissatisfied at the top of the social ladder with the meek and the poor at the bottom. This coalition, when manifested into upheaval and revolution, ironically truncates the spirit of the whole to prosper and advance, hence leading to the complete –at times irreversible- material and moral demise of the afflicted society.
